Evaluation of frequency of different major salivary glans tumors in patients referred to pathology department of Imam Reza Hospital during 1381-1390 years.

Background :
Salivary gland tumors are an important part of oral and maxillofacial pathology. these tumors constitute 3-10 % of all head and neck neoplasms.Incidence of these tumors may be associated with race and geographic region. This study aimed to determine the frequency and types of benign and malignant tumors of the major salivary glands in patients referred to the department of pathology Imam Reza Hospital in Tabriz between 2002 and 2012 years.
Methods :
In this descriptive analytic and retrospective study, all of major salivary gland tumors from archive of the pathology department of Imam Reza Hospital at Tabriz during 10 years period were extracted. The data including age ,gender,location and type of tumors were obtained from medical records.Descriptive Statistics were carried out by using SPSS 15 software .
Result :
These were 136 Patients with salivary gland tumors in the 10 years study . 82/4 % of the patients had benign tumors while 17/6 % was malignant .Chisquare test showed significant difference in the frequency of these tumors. In benign tumors 57/1 % were male and 42/9 % female. Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign tumor. In malignant tumors 45/8 % were male and 54/2 % female. Squamous Cell Carcinoma was the most common malignant tumor. The average age of patients with benign and malignant tumor was 42 and 45 years, respectively. parotid was the most common site of involvement.
Conclusion :
Although there are some similarities in the frequency of salivary glands tumors included age,gender,type of these tumors in different communities, in some cases there are also significant differences that can reflect geographical and racial factors in the prevalence of these lesions.
